Why this page, why students, why * ?
Asterisk - Often I heard of this software before, wanted to use it, but no experience wirth linux. So some friends helped me out on Linux. And see there: since 3 weeks I can not believe that i did not use Linux more before.
A lot of people think now: Ok, i know Linux, what is Asterisk (*)?
Thats relatively easily:
Asterisk is the central server software for any telephone application you can imaginr (SIP, IAX, With special cards ISDN ability, also for multiplexedlines, bluetooth for mobiles (asterisk acts as a headset).... just about everything that can be plugged into a computer works with asterisk
You can realize a soft phone with *, or simulate a ISDN line to phone out over SIP, or connect a globally acting company to voip.
Mostly no new Hardware is needed as asterisk is often used in between the telephone companies line and the old Hardware-PBX.
But what has this to do with students?
In Germany monthly telephone line costs are pretty high. Also you don't have cheap DSL only over those lines. All because of our good german Telekom.
It costs u at least 16,99 Euros (20 US$) a month to just have a analog line...
So this is pretty much expensive.
As I live in a student dorm with 100 other students and also the university has connected all dorm rooms with a 100Mbit FullDuplex Network Plug, I thought: Why not use asterisk? The internet is included in our rent, so why not use it for perfect Telecommunication without monthly cost.
As Voip had a boom in Germany (Free Landline Number in Germany and UK for incoming calls: sipgate.de) and some companies made good offers, we should use.
So this was essential for success.
Also the choice was asterisk, as we have to connect to a vpn for internet in our LAN and no SIP Telephone supports that so far ;)
For ISDN Network Termination (NT mode) we use a ISDN Card with Cologne Chip (HFC). This card is capable of terminating a ISDN bus like you get it from a proffesional Telephone Company. You can use distinctive sounds, own msn etcetera etcetera.
So I started this all in atesting situation and have to say the results are more than amazing
asterisk is very powerful
